Why did you want to work at Emerson?
I became interested in working at Emerson because of David Feldman and later meeting Andy Zimmer through AIMS. I appreciated the intimacy of working at a school that was a Y5-8 where focusing on student-centered and whole child education. I especially appreciate the focus on SEL where students can not only learn about specific academic subjects, they are also given the opportunity to learn about the various layers who they are as a learner.
What wows you about Emerson?
I’m wowed by the depth of relationships that students appear to have with their teachers.
In one word, what is your working style?
Eclectic
How would students describe you?
This is a good question and one that I can’t answer from a Emerson student perspective since I’ve just started. But what I can say is that students from other schools have described me as approachable, supportive, helpful and direct.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
Ubiquity which essentially would be the ability to be in many places at once. There’s nothing worse than not being able to meet the need of a student experiencing a challenge when I’m in a meeting or working with another student. While it might be easy to come out of a meeting to address a need – there are times when I can’t and that’s difficult for me.
Favorite artist or band?
BTS
What would surprise people about you?
I tend to lean more on the introversion side … I’m good at acting extroverted because I’m practiced at presenting to large audiences; and truth be told – I love sitting quietly quilting, reading or going on a solo hike.
What do you do when you’re not at Emerson?
When I’m not at Emerson, I’m either at my office seeing my clients in my private practice, quilting in the evenings or simply hugging on my dogs!
Who/what inspires you?
Young people inspire me. I do believe that they are the reason that I come to work. Students have so many questions, so much to navigate and so much energy!
What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
Not fair! I have two favorites – Rocky Road and Black Cherry!
If a movie were made about you, who would be cast to play you?
Angelina Jolie! She’s feisty, sensitive and can fight when she needs to protect her people!
Favorite quote, or anything else you would like Emerson families to know about you?
“Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” ~ James Baldwin.
Ideally acknowledgement and honest confrontation need to happen in order to engage in meaningful change; and as change is the only constant in life – if we’re not comfortable with change, then growing and developing become difficult!
