We take education personally.
At Emerson, your child’s curiosity shapes their experience enabling remarkable growth.
We focus on the unique complexity of your child to elevate their innate enthusiasm for even deeper learning. The more our team learns, the more inspired they become to provide what’s needed to keep your child’s engagement high. Emerson students realize how great school, their teachers, and they can be.

At Emerson, we believe that when a student’s curiosity, intellect, interests, and identity are allowed to shape their learning experience, a whole new level of possibility is revealed. We’ve purposefully designed an innovative approach and a specialized environment that nurtures each child’s natural talents, builds on their strengths, and elevates their enthusiasm, enrichment, and excitement to match the very heights of their potential.
Emerson is structured into three distinct divisions, each designed to cater to the unique developmental stages of our students. This ensures that every child receives the appropriate support and challenges necessary for their growth.
Young Fives through 3rd grade
The Foundation division nurtures young learners from Young Fives through 3rd grade, laying a strong academic and social-emotional base.
Grades 4 through 6
The Bridge division guides students in grades 4 through 6, fostering independence and critical thinking during this crucial transitional period.
Grades 7 and 8
The Capstone division prepares 7th and 8th graders for high school with advanced academics, leadership opportunities, and personal growth.
Here are some numbers that we think are pretty important.

Our 1st grade Spanish students recently visited the Young Fives classroom to share the monster stories they have been creating. As they read aloud to their younger peers, they practiced their language skills while stepping into the role of teacher and mentor.
These cross-grade connections are a special part of the Emerson experience. Young Fives students get a glimpse of the exciting learning that lies ahead, while our 1st graders build confidence, leadership skills, and a sense of responsibility as role models.
🎬🎵 Original music. Original films. One unforgettable night. 🎵🎬
Last night, our AMP (Audio Music Production) students shared the results of a year’s worth of creativity, experimentation, and hard work. The evening featured the premiere of original short films that students both produced and soundtracked, giving families a chance to experience their storytelling and technical skills on the big screen.
Guests also explored listening stations showcasing original tracks students have been developing throughout the school year, highlighting the wide range of musical styles and artistic voices within the program.
With students walking the red carpet before the premiere, the event was a fitting celebration of the creativity, collaboration, and dedication that make AMP such a unique part of the Emerson experience.
Our used book sale was a huge success and a true celebration of the joy of reading. Students stocked up on summer reading material, pre-loved books found new homes, and together we helped support the important work of @washtenawpromise, a local nonprofit dedicated to promoting literacy and learning opportunities for children.
Happy reading, Emerson! 📖☀️
Mr. Nolan’s middle school science room recently became a place of discovery for younger students as classes visited to learn about an aging sea lamprey being cared for in the lab. The experience gave students an up-close look at one of the Great Lakes’ most well-known invasive species while sparking conversations about ecosystems, native wildlife, and environmental impact.
For our younger students, the visit was a memorable opportunity to ask questions, make observations, and experience science in a hands-on way that sparks curiosity for the years ahead.
Last week’s Exposition of Learning was a true celebration of learning across every division of Emerson School. From our youngest students proudly sharing hands-on science projects, to Bridge students presenting their imaginative Nations United countries, to Capstone students confidently showcasing experiments and research, the entire campus was alive with curiosity, creativity, and student voice.
🏙️ Detroit Through Third Grade Eyes
From the Belle Isle and the historic Belle Isle Aquarium to the iconic Spirit of Detroit, Michigan Central Station, and lunch at the original Buddy`s Pizza, our 3rd graders experienced some of the very best of the Motor City on an unforgettable field trip. 🍕✨
🌱 Breaking Ground on the Future of Emerson
Last week, Emerson School celebrated the groundbreaking of our new playground and outdoor learning spaces, marking an exciting milestone in the Play It Forward campaign. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, more than $1.3 million was raised to transform how our students learn, play, and explore outdoors. Construction begins next month and is slated for completion by the fall, with updates shared throughout the summer. We are deeply grateful to the many donors, families, and supporters who helped make this vision a reality and helped ensure these outdoor spaces can be enjoyed by Emerson students and families for years to come.

The mission of Emerson School is to provide a dynamic and nurturing learning environment that fosters empathy, communication, creativity, leadership, and above all, a lifelong love of learning.
We fulfill our mission with small class sizes, by providing individualized attention across a broad and rich, student-centered curriculum and through a committed, talented team of educators who help children achieve sustained academic success.
