6th Grade Finance - Up Close & Personal
Emerson 6th graders put their “money” and knowledge to work on Friday, March 31, when they visited the Junior Achievement Financial Park in Detroit. Having spent the past month working on a personal finance unit, the math students arrived ready to tackle the real-life budget simulations that the Center specializes in.
Take an individual portfolio, add a salary and some random life situations. From this starting point, each student opened a checking account and made a budget that included mortgage, utilities, insurance, auto, food, entertainment and a host of other expenses. Stock investments were tracked, decisions made, budgets balanced.
6th grade math teacher Mary Ellen Flaherty and a team of parent volunteers accompanied the students. It all added up to practical learning and lots of fun.
