Beginning Strings
This is the ensemble for beginners in 1st-5th grade. Here, one can receive a basic education of instrumental skills. For some, it is a way to become involved in orchestra at a young age while for others, it’s a way to begin their life-long journey of becoming a orchestra performer. Students learn to play the violin, viola, cello or bass and to read music in the ensemble.Wire Choir
The Wire Choir is the next step in the orchestra program. There are more complex harmonies and melodies in the music and note-reading skills are further developed.
Elementary Orchestra
This orchestra is primarily for 4th through 5th graders with experience playing in an ensemble. The music requires advanced note-reading skills and a more extensive knowledge of the instrument. Membership helps students to prepare for the Middle School Orchestra.
Middle School Orchestra
Emerson’s Middle School Orchestra performs exciting repertoire that extends their ensemble and instrumental skills. Many Emerson orchestra graduates continue to play in orchestra programs in high school and college. Each week, students practice their orchestra music at home for 45 minutes and rehearse three times during the school day. Although it is a definite challenge and requires a lot of commitment, it is a fun and rewarding activity.
Chamber Orchestra
The chamber orchestra is an ensemble for students that want that extra challenge. A chamber orchestra challenges individuals to confidently lead since there are usually only one or two people playing each part. Lower School students may audition to play in the ensemble, while all Middle School Orchestra members are invited to join. Smaller performances occur throughout the year that lead to the final performance at Kerrytown Concert House.
