EMERSONACADEMICS

Foreign Language
The foreign language program increases students' understanding of people throughout the world, introduces language in practical, useful contexts, and builds a foundation for further study. Students learn through the immersion method, though grammar is also presented in English to ensure comprehension. Language instruction, which includes listening, speaking, reading, and writing, is reinforced through in-class exercises and a variety of media. Spanish is taught in grades K-1, French in grades 2-3 and Japanese in grades 4-5. Students in grades 6-8 choose one language to study among Japanese, Spanish, French or Latin.

Middle School Electives
The Middle School day features an array of enrichment classes known as "electives". A student may choose up to six electives each year. Electives such as band, orchestra, drama, chorus, drawing, and journalism are extensions of "core" classes and appeal to those who wish to develop further proficiency. Other electives such as sewing, photography, academic games, outdoor education, and gardening, contribute to a well-rounded educational experience.
Technology
The development of skills and knowledge essential for participation in a technologically oriented global society is our focus. An integrated curriculum teaches the selection and use of appropriate technology to assist in problem solving, information processing, and creative expression. Students learn to be responsible participants in the electronic community.
Science
Life Science, earth science, and chemistry are the components of a nine-year spiraling curriculum. The hands-on program is designed to increase interest in science, develop skills through the use of the scientific method, and ensure a strong knowledge base in every student.
